Artist Statement  By William L. Rogers

This artist statement is a list of articles that address my views about
my art. These articles lay the direction and beliefs that I have about
my art.

Article 1.
Process.  The artist creates an object of art. The object is
for the viewer. The act of creating is for the artist. This “act of
creating” is the process. The processes of creating a bronze
sculptured speaks to my needs.

Article 2.
Challenge.  I need a challenge in life.  Bronze sculpture
challenges the artist to learn many different skills.

Article 3.
Risk.  I need risk. I want to take risk. I belief that God
instilled into man a need to do something that involves risk. Working
in bronze requires the artist to take risks that is inherited in the
process. The lost wax method requires the artist to destroy his art in
order to create it.

Article 4.
Danger. I need to do something that is dangerous.  Again,
I belief that God instilled into man to do something that is
dangerous. We all take risk but that risk may not be dangerous.
Working in bronze is dangerous and many safety precautions have
to be taken.

Article 5.
Style.   I want to create something that has a unique style.
An artist has a style. If you know an artist you should be able to
recognize his art. A good example is Picasso. You know his figure
drawing from his style.

Article 6.
A True Creation. I want to create what has not been seen
before. If I paint an exact copy of a person I may as well take a
photograph or work from a photo. Is it not more  interesting to look a
portrait by Modigliani? When you look at his portrait paintings you
are looking at a new creation of that person.

Article 7.
 Faith.
a. I will not create anything that goes against my faith. I will not
make an object that may be worshiped. I will not make an object
that visually negates what I belief. I will not create a golden calf. A
demon. An object of another religion.
b. I will try to be inspired by scripture.
c. I want my art to serve God's kingdom.

Article 8.
Movement. I want to create objects that shows.

Article 9.
Building. I wont to build on what other artist have
created. Picasso and many artists have created works of art that
build on African art.

Article 10.
Uniqueness.  I want each piece that I make to be
unique.  I will not make a mold of my wax pieces.  This means that
an individual piece will not be massed produced. However, I do
reproduce pieces by making a new wax model. This is  building on
what I have created. The next pieces should be different and better.

Article 11
. Quality.  I will try to do the best job that I can. I will not
finish a piece unless I am satisfied with the piece. I will do a
complete inspection of the piece.

Article 12.
Objective Art.  I want to create objective art. I enjoy the
challenge of the human and animal forms. Therefore, most of my
pieces will be human or animal.
